Observation of a Structurally-Driven Mott Transition

چکیده
We report a first-order structurally-driven Mott transition a t T=357 K in single crystal Ca2RuO4, an isomorph to the superconductor Sr2RuO4. A discontinuous jump in electrical resistivity with a concomitant change in magnetic moment is triggered by a pronounced structural transition from a high temperature tetragonal phase to a low temperature orthorhombic phase. We argue that t h e elastic energy associated with the reduction of the crystal s y m m e t r y coupled with the electronic delocalization energy represent p r imary forces that drive the observed Mott transition.

Observation of a novel orbital selective Mott transition in Ca(1.8)Sr(0.2)RuO(4).
We observed a novel orbital selective Mott transition in Ca(1.8)Sr(0.2)RuO(4) by angle-resolved photoemission. While two sets of dispersing bands and the Fermi surface associated with the doubly degenerate d(yz) and d(zx) orbitals are identified, the Fermi surface associated with the wider d(xy) band is missing as a consequence of selective Mott localization. Our theoretical calculations demons...
متن کاملThe Mott Transition and F Electron Physics
The Mott transition, namely the metal–insulator transition (MIT) driven by electron–electron interactions, is a fascinating phenomenon realized experimentally in many compounds such as V2O3 and Ni(Se,S)2. It was suggested many years ago by Johansson that the Mott transition concept is also relevant to elements in the lanthanide and actinide series. The development of dynamical mean–field method...
متن کاملObservation of the exciton Mott transition in the photoluminescence of coupled quantum wells
Indirect excitons in coupled quantum wells have long radiative lifetimes and form a cold quasi-two-dimensional population suitable for studying collective quantum effects. Here we report the observation of the exciton Mott transition from an insulating (excitons) to a conducting (ionized electron-hole pairs) phase, which occurs gradually as a function of carrier density and temperature. The tra...
متن کاملSlow dynamics of electrons at a metal–Mott insulator boundary in an organic system with disorder
The Mott transition-a metal-insulator transition caused by repulsive Coulomb interactions between electrons-is a central issue in condensed matter physics because it is the mother earth of various attractive phenomena. Outstanding examples are high-Tc (critical temperature) cuprates and manganites exhibiting colossal magnetoresistance. Furthermore, spin liquid states, which are quantum-fluctuat...
متن کاملQuantum Mott Transition and Superconductivity
The gas-liquid transition is a first-order transition terminating at a finite-temperature critical point with diverging density fluctuations. Mott transition, a metal-insulator transition driven by Coulomb repulsion between electrons, has been identified with this textbook transition. However, the critical temperature of the Mott transition can be suppressed, resulting in unusual quantum critic...
